Locations are important.
What we share with those we love in those locations is what makes them essential.
When I was three or four years old, my mom took me to the library. It was a quiet place, safe, and full of wonder—books. She would choose a picture book, sit with me on the reading mat, and read the simple language out loud. I would stare in awe at the drawings. “Itsy Bitsy Spider” was my favorite. The watercolors were beautiful and comforting.
When I go into libraries today, some forty years later, I still feel the same sense of comfort, warmth, and wonder. All those books, words, ideas, pictures, waiting for us to discover and get lost in their worlds.
We are all home right now, which means we need to make our homes locations that are important once again. We can make our homes quiet if need be, safe always, and full of wonder by dusting off our favorites and plopping down on the rug and reading the words out loud.
